Saint Patrick’s Day, observed annually on March 17, is a global celebration of Irish culture. St. Patrick’s Day is Ireland’s biggest holiday. However, the clergyman it celebrates was not Irish. Maewyn Succat, as he was then called, was born in modern-day England in 387 AD. He was kidnapped and brought to work on sheep farms in Ireland at age 16. The teenager escaped a few years later and spent 15 years at a monastery in England. Over the next few centuries, he was credited with heroic deeds, including driving out all snakes from Ireland. The March 17 celebration started in 1631 when the Church established a Feast Day in honor of St. Patrick.

Happy 100th Birthday to Mary! Mary is truly young at heart & keeps very active in the community. Most days, Mary can be found participating in word, card & sports games & hardly ever misses BINGO. You’ll never find her without a smile on her face & kind words on her lips. We love you Mary & wish you the happiest & healthiest of your 101st year!
The Aravilla Book Club once again thanks our resident book reviewer for an excellent & compelling book review. Last month, Joyce cleverly introduced us to the women of the book “Hidden Figures”, a story of the underappreciated black women mathematicians at NASA that enabled the US space program to excel. Her hard work & professionalism is so appreciated by us here at Aravilla.
